Identifying Demonic Sickness: How to Recognize It and What to Do

In deliverance ministry, one of the most misunderstood aspects is the connection between sickness and demonic activity. Not all sickness is demonic, but there are times when an illness may have a spiritual root. As ministers of deliverance, it is crucial to have spiritual discernment, guided by the Holy Spirit, to identify when a sickness is caused by demonic influence and to know how to respond biblically.

What is Demonic Sickness? Demonic sickness refers to physical or mental ailments that are caused or intensified by demonic spirits. These spirits can enter through open doors such as sin, trauma, generational curses, occult involvement, unforgiveness, and more. The Bible clearly shows that spirits can afflict the body:

"And behold, there was a woman who had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself... Jesus said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability.'" (Luke 13:11-12, ESV)

In this passage, the woman was not just physically ill—she had a spirit of infirmity. Jesus did not prescribe medication; He cast out the spirit.

How to Identify Demonic Sickness: While only the Holy Spirit can give full revelation, here are some signs and patterns that may indicate a demonic root to a sickness:

1. Incurable or Mysterious Illness: When medical professionals cannot diagnose or treat a condition effectively despite numerous tests and interventions, it may be spiritual.
2. Sudden Onset Without Natural Cause: If an illness appears out of nowhere with no logical explanation—especially after a traumatic event or occult exposure—it could be spiritual.
3. Cycles and Patterns: Sicknesses that repeat in cycles or run in the family (generational curses) may be rooted in demonic activity.
4. Symptoms That Manifest During Prayer or Worship: If symptoms worsen or manifest during worship, prayer, or reading Scripture, it's a sign the sickness may be spiritual in nature.
5. Nighttime Affliction: Spiritual attacks that occur during sleep—choking, heaviness, paralysis, pain—are common signs of spiritual affliction.
6. Accompanying Demonic Manifestations: If the sick person also experiences demonic dreams, voices, thoughts of suicide, fear, or torment, this suggests a deeper spiritual issue.

What to Do if You Suspect Demonic Sickness1. Pray for Discernment: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the root cause. Not every sickness is demonic—some are physical or emotional—but the Lord reveals truth to those who ask.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God..." (James 1:5)

2. Lead in Repentance: If sin or disobedience has opened a door, lead the person in repentance and renunciation. Confession breaks legal rights demons may have.

"Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." (James 5:16)

3. Command the Spirit to Leave: With the authority of Christ, command the spirit of infirmity to leave in Jesus' name.

"In my name they will cast out demons..." (Mark 16:17)

4. Close the Doors: Teach the person to close all doors to the enemy—cutting ties with the occult, forgiving others, rejecting fear, and renewing the mind with the Word.

5. Maintain the Deliverance: Healing must be maintained through faith, obedience, and spiritual discipline. Encourage daily prayer, Scripture reading, and accountability.
"Go and sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." (John 5:14)

Final Thoughts: Demonic sickness is real, and Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). As deliverance ministers, we are called to continue His work. Discernment, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit are essential tools in identifying and addressing these hidden afflictions. Never fear the enemy—Christ has given us authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19).

Proverbs 26:2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

The Bible makes it clear that a curse will not come upon unless you deserve them. When a witch creates a curse, she summons a demon that will carry out the curse. This is specially effective, if the witch knows that you have an open door. Witches have familiar spirits that are able to discover hidden sin. These familiars receive information from what we call monitoring spirits. Monitoring spirits are spirits that monitor you. They watch you day and night. Like predators they wait for a moment of weakness to pounce on you ( Peter 5:8, ESV: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.") Once an open door is identified, the demon conjured by the witch will start its assignment upon the victim.

It is impossible to be totally sinless. We know that at one point or another, we will sin. This is why asking forgiveness and repenting (turning away from sin) is so important. Sin opens the doors that allows Satan to enter into our lives. It gives Satan legal right to demonize us.

How to deal with spells and curses:

A born again believer that believes the word of God and follows Jesus Christ does not need to be worried about witchcraft. Demons cannot carry out assignments on them (Psalm 91). The doors are open when the Born Again Christian begins to backslide. That's when we lose God's protection. A true Christian is a true Christian 24/7. They follow Jesus Christ, and carry their cross daily.

If you are a backslider, there is hope for you. As stated above, repent and ask God to forgive you of your sins. He is faithful to forgive you (1 John 1:9). This breaks the demon's legal right, and facilitates expulsion. If you have been cursed or a spell has been cast against you, you need to have a deliverance minister help you identify the open door. Once the open door is identified, the door can be closed through confession of sins and repentance, and then the demon can be cast out.

Generational curses are real and so are generational blessings: A study of Jonathan Edwards and Max Jukes

Psalm 112:2

1 Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
2 Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Jonathan Edwards, was a Puritan Preacher in the 1700s. He was one of the most respected preachers in his day. He attended Yale at the age of thirteen and later went on to become the president of Princeton college. He married his wife Sara in 1727 and they were blessed with eleven children. Every night when Mr. Edwards was home, he would spend an hour conversing with his family and then praying a blessing over each child. Jonathan and his wife Sarah passed on a great, godly legacy to their eleven children.
An American educator, A.E. Winship decided to trace the descendants of Jonathan Edwards almost 150 years after his death. His findings are remarkable, especially when compared to another man from the same time period known as Max Jukes.
Jonathan Edwards’ legacy includes: 1 U.S. Vice-President, 1 Dean of a law school, 1 dean of a medical school, 3 U.S. Senators, 3 governors, 3 mayors, 13 college presidents, 30 judges, 60 doctors, 65 professors, 75 Military officers, 80 public office holders, 100 lawyers, 100 clergymen, and 285 college graduates.
How may this be explained? Edwards was a godly man, but he was also hard working, intelligent and moral. Furthermore, Winship states, “Much of the capacity and talent, intensity and character of the more than 1,400 of Edwards’ family is due to Mrs. Edwards.”
Max Jukes’ legacy came to people’s attention when the family trees of 42 different men in the New York prison system were traced back to him. He lived in New York at about the same period as Edwards. The Jukes family originally was studied by sociologist Richard L. Dugdale in 1877.
Jukes’ descendants included: 7 murderers, 60 thieves, 190 prostitutes, 150 other convicts, 310 paupers, and 440 who were physically wrecked by addiction to alcohol. Of the 1,200 descendants that were studied, 300 died prematurely.
These contrasting legacies provide an example of what some call the five-generation rule. “How a parent raises their child — the love they give, the values they teach, the emotional environment they offer, the education they provide — influences not only their children but the four generations to follow, either for good or evil.” What a challenging thought! If someone studied your descendants four generations later, what would you want them to discover? Do you want an Edwards’ legacy or a Jukes’ legacy? The life you live will determine the legacy you leave!

Common Open Doors to Demons

Below is a list of common demonic access points. This is not an exhaustive list, but it covers the most common doors.

1) Embracing Sin:

When we justify and embrace sin, we come into agreement with the devil (Ephesians 4:26-27).

2) Traumatic Experiences:

- Being sinned against - especially when we are young - can open a door (e.g. rejection, abuse).
-Other traumatic experiences can open the door (e.g. accidents, divorce, fearful events).

3) Believing the lies of the enemy: When we believe a lie, we come into agreement with the devil who is the "Father of Lies." (see John 8:44)

4) Un-forgiveness:

Unforgiveness fives the devil legal right to torment us (Matthew 18: 21-35),

5) Exposure to unholy things:

Being exposed to unholy things can open a door to the devil (pornography, horror movies, dark music).

6) Involvement in false religion, cults, and false teachings:

Behind every idol is a demon (Corinthians 10:19-20).
False teaching carries with is demonic spirit (2 Corinthians 11:4, 1 Timothy 4:11).

7) Any occult involvement:

Occult: (hidden or secret arts). Contact with the occult is major open door to the demonic and is strictly forbidden in scripture (Deuteronomy 18:9-12).

8) Curses:

Generational Curses (E.g. Alcoholism, abuse, suicide, drugs)
Word Curses and negative word curses (James 3:8-10)
Occult Curses- Curses/spells placed by those in the occult.

9) Ungodly relationships / souls ties:

Spiritual / soulish / fleshly bonds created through ungodly sexual relationships (1 Corinthians 6:16)
Unhealthy relationshipsthat involve control, manipulation, intimidation, or abuse.

What are Familiar Spirits?

What are familiar spirits?
Familiar spirits target generational lines. They know everything about the person they inhabit and their ancestors. They know your emotions and your thinking patterns. They have studied you and your ancestors for hundreds of years. In fact, more than likely, if you have a familiar spirit, you were born with it. They use this information to keep you in bondage.

What do they do?
There is no such thing as a good familiar spirit. The Bible makes it clear that anyone that seeks a familiar is to be cut off. Witches use them for the purpose of profit and other selfish reasons. Although witches believe that they can control these demons, the truth is that these demons usually turn against those people that use them. During exorcisms, these demons will often call witches and conjurers stupid and dumb. They make fun of them. If the witch never repents, they end up in hell, and the demons know it.

How do they get into the bloodlines?
Usually someone conjures them or opens the door to them. Unless they are dealt with, they pass on from one generation to the other. If a family member dies that has a familiar, then that person’ familiar will transfer to another living family member. This is because usually the conditions to use a familiar is to dedicate family lines. The family bloodline must be cleansed.

What happens if I use a familiar spirit?
The Bible makes it clear that using familiar spirits, fortune telling, card reading, speaking to dead people (necromancy) or any form of contacting the dead, defiles a person (Leviticus 19:31) . This makes them spiritually unclean and opens the person up for demonization. If you go to a witch and she tells you that she sees your dead family member and that they have a message for you, its not your family member. It’s a familiar spirit that knows your dead relative inside and out.

What are some familiar spirits?
Usually people that have familiar spirits will see patterns within their family, such as generational depression, anxiety, fear, mental illness or they hear voices.

What do familiars look like?
Familiars can take the shape of animals or humans. They are often realistic in how they look. They don’t look like ghost. Often people would say they have seen dead relatives in their homes, it’s not your relative, it’s a familiar.

I remember my past life. Did I reincarnate?
No! The Bible said that we are appointed to die once and then the judgement (Hebrew 9:27). The memories you have are false memories implanted by a demon. You have a familiar spirit that needs to be dealt with.

What happens if I have a familiar spirit and I don’t do anything about it?

They will destroy you.
They will prevent you from having a personal relationship with God.
They will keep you bound and restricted in all areas of your life.

What can I do to get rid of a familiar spirit?

Get professional help (deliverance minister/exorcist)
Repent (turn away from such practices)
Ask God to forgive you
Say the following prayer:

Speak out and decree audibly:
Familiar spirits get out of me in Jesus’s name. Every mind-biding spirit hindering my God-given destiny, I command you to cease your attacks in Jesus’ name. I command you to release your assignment from my mind and mental thinking. I speak and decree a sound mind, and I am self-disciplined and self-controlled (2 Tim. 1:7), in Jesus’ name.

Are you under a curse? You may be and not even know it.

What is a curse?
A curse is intended to invoke a supernatural power to inflict harm or punishment on someone or something.

How can I be cursed?
1) Generational curses (curses that are in your bloodline). These are often identified by sinful patterns in families.(Exodus 20:5)
2) Habitual Sins (disobedience to God) (2 Timothy 2:26)
3) Witchcraft (some one cast spells or curses against you)
4) Cursed objects in your home (Joshua 7).
5) Dealing with the occult, including checking your horoscope, tarot card reading, and Ouija board (Leviticus 19:31).
6) Word curses (could be from your parents. ie..."You are a good for nothing." (James 3:10).

How can I know if I am under a curse?

1) Analyze your life for patterns? Satan always leaves clues.
2) Did someone tell you they cursed you?
3) Do you see evil patterns in your family line?
4) Are you a child of disobedience? The devil may be using you as puppet according to 2 Timothy 2:26.
5) Have someone cursed you verbally?
6) Did you bring an object into your home and things are now in disarray? We see this with antiques, although they be new items. We have dealt with curse objects based on designs and religious connotation.
7) Are you attracted to the occult? It may be you have witchcraft in your family line. Visiting healers, shamans and Witch Doctors will defile you and open you up for demonization. In fact any form of divination, looking for forbidden knowledge and power.

What can I do to break these curses?

1) Have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
2) Make sure you believe the right gospel. We don't go to heaven because we are good. We go to heaven because of what Jesus Christ did for us. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
3) Being a Christian does not except you from being cursed.
4) Curses are not done until you break them. Curses must be broken.
5) Stay in the Word.
6) Demons must be told to leave!

What will happen if I don't break the curses in my life?

We know that the devil has 3 intentions in the life of a believer. He wants to kill, steal and destroy.

Are You Under the Curse of Illegitimacy?

Dealing with African Spirit Spouses

Why do Demons Speak in Tongues?

When performing deliverance the person receiving deliverance will sometimes speak in demonic tongues. When they do, you can assume 100% that these people have somehow opened their 5th Chakra.

New Agers will tell you that to be open and aligned in the fifth chakra is to speak, listen, and express yourself from a higher form of communication.

But the reality is that demons use Chakras as a tunnel system to move around your body and as seen in the case of Chakra #5, as a way to communicate.

Stay away from these occult practices. This world will tell you that opening your Chakras is good for you, but reality shows otherwise.
