All scripture is good for teaching, rebuking, and training in righteousness. But how is the Word of God used during a confrontation with the devil. While most Christians will pick up their Bible and start reading from their favorite spiritual warfare scripture, we must remember that the enemy is also able to quote and twist scripture. If we are to go into hand to hand combat with the enemy we must be versed on the word of God. Otherwise, the enemy will have the advantage over us.
So how should the scriptures be used during a battle with the devil? Jesus provided a few example on how a Christian should use scripture to fight the enemy. Luke 4:1-14"1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ” 12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside." In these examples, you see how both the devil and Jesus were using the scriptures to their advantage. The devil twisted the scriptures to his advantage, but Jesus quoted truth. John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. When you counter the devils lies with the truth of the Bible, the devil has no choice but to obey. Jesus used scriptures that voided the lies of the devil. Examples: Example 1: Devil: You have no power over me! You: No devil, the scriptures read: Luke 10:19 "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Example 2: Devil: You can't cast me out! You: No devil, I can! The scripture state: Mark 16:17 "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues" Example 3: Devil: You will never be free You: That's not rue devil, the scripture say that; John 8:36 "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." Example 4: Devil: We will put fear in you! You: The scriptures say: 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and love, and of a sound mind." The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Example 5: Devil: There is no salvation for you! You are going to hell with me. look at all the evil things you have done! You: You are wrong devil and this is why: Romans 8:38-39 "38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 10:9-10 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. The scriptures must be quoted with faith. Simply reading the scriptures do nothing. But if you truly believe what the word of God says about any issues and quote it back to him, the devil doesn't have a chance.
