While there can be overlap in certain practices, they developed in different ways and have different religious and cultural meanings. For Christians, the most important question is not simply what these traditions are called, but whether particular spiritual practices are compatible with the worship of Jesus Christ and the teachings of Scripture. What Is Voodoo? Voodoo, more accurately spelled Vodou in Haiti and Voodoo in some American traditions, is a religion that developed through a combination of West and Central African religious traditions and, historically, elements of Roman Catholicism. Different forms of Vodou exist, particularly in Haiti, Louisiana, and parts of the Caribbean. Practitioners may believe in a supreme creator while also seeking interaction with spiritual beings commonly called lwa or spirits. Rituals can involve prayer, ceremonies, offerings, music, dancing, sacred objects, and attempts to communicate with or receive assistance from spirits. From a biblical Christian perspective, the primary concern arises whenever a person seeks spiritual guidance, power, protection, healing, or revelation from spirits rather than from God. Scripture repeatedly warns God's people against attempting to communicate with spiritual entities or seeking supernatural power through forbidden spiritual practices. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 says: "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer." The passage concludes that these practices are detestable before the Lord. The biblical issue is therefore not someone's ethnicity or culture. The issue is where spiritual authority is being sought. Christians are commanded to seek God alone. What Is Hoodoo? Hoodoo is different from Voodoo. Hoodoo is generally considered a system of African American folk spirituality and folk magic rather than a formally organized religion. It developed in the United States, particularly among African American communities in the South, drawing from African traditions as well as influences from Christianity, Indigenous practices, and European folk traditions. Historically, Hoodoo practices have included things such as:
Some Hoodoo practitioners also use the Bible, especially the Psalms, in their practices. But simply using Bible verses does not automatically make a spiritual practice biblical. Christianity does not teach us to use Scripture as a magical formula to manipulate circumstances or spiritual forces. Scripture is God's revealed Word and is meant to lead us into faith, obedience, prayer, repentance, and relationship with Christ. Simon the sorcerer learned this distinction in Acts 8. After witnessing the power of the Holy Spirit, Simon attempted to obtain spiritual power for himself. Peter rebuked him: "Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money." — Acts 8:20 The power of God is not magic. The Bible Makes a Distinction Between God's Power and MagicOne of the clearest biblical examples occurs when Moses confronted Pharaoh's magicians. Exodus 7 describes Egyptian magicians attempting to reproduce supernatural signs through their secret arts. God ultimately demonstrated that His authority was greater. This pattern continues throughout Scripture. The Bible never presents witchcraft, sorcery, divination, or consultation with spirits as alternative methods of accessing God's power. Instead, they are prohibited. Leviticus 19:31 says: "Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God." The command is very clear: do not seek them. Divination Is ForbiddenDivination involves attempting to obtain hidden knowledge or guidance through supernatural means apart from God. This can include practices such as fortune-telling, spirit consultation, certain forms of card reading, omens, or other methods of attempting to discover hidden information spiritually. The Bible repeatedly condemns divination. In Acts 16:16–18, Paul encountered a young woman described as having a "spirit of divination." Although she appeared to possess supernatural knowledge, Paul did not treat her ability as a gift from God. Instead, Scripture says: "Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." The spirit left her. This passage demonstrates an important Christian principle: Not everything supernatural comes from God. Sorcery Is Also CondemnedThe New Testament continues the Old Testament prohibition against occult practices. Galatians 5:19–21 lists the "works of the flesh," including witchcraft or sorcery, depending upon the translation. The Greek word used is pharmakeia, a term associated in the ancient world with sorcery, magical practices, spells, and potions. Revelation also warns repeatedly about sorcery. Revelation 21:8 includes sorcerers among those who persist in rebellion against God, while Revelation 22:15 again places sorcerers outside the holy city. The biblical message remains consistent from Genesis to Revelation: God's people are not to seek spiritual power through occult means. What About Ancestor Spirits? Another area Christians should consider carefully is attempted communication with deceased relatives or ancestors. Scripture prohibits necromancy—the attempt to consult the dead. One of the strongest examples is found in 1 Samuel 28. King Saul sought out the woman at Endor because God was no longer answering him. Saul asked her to bring up Samuel. Whatever one's interpretation of every detail of this unusual passage, the Bible makes one thing unmistakably clear: Saul's decision to seek forbidden spiritual consultation was an act of rebellion. First Chronicles later explains: "So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD... and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it." — 1 Chronicles 10:13 Christians should therefore never attempt to contact deceased relatives, ancestors, spirit guides, or other spiritual beings. Our mediator is Jesus Christ. Mixing Christianity With Occult PracticesOne of the greatest dangers is syncretism—combining Christianity with spiritual practices that Scripture forbids. Someone may pray to Jesus while simultaneously practicing divination. Someone may read Psalms while performing magical rituals. Someone may display a cross while attempting to communicate with spirits. Someone may invoke God's name while using charms, spells, or rituals designed to manipulate another person's will. But the presence of Christian terminology does not automatically make the practice Christian. When people came to Christ in Ephesus, Acts 19 records what happened to their magical practices: "Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men." — Acts 19:19 They did not add Jesus to their occult practices. They abandoned their former practices. That is biblical repentance. Spiritual Power Must Come From GodChristian spiritual authority does not come from charms, objects, rituals, spirits, spells, roots, powders, magical formulas, or secret knowledge. It comes from God. Jesus said: "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." — Matthew 28:18 Christians pray in the name of Jesus because authority belongs to Him. James 4:7 tells believers: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Notice the order. First: submit to God. Then: resist the devil. Spiritual warfare is not about learning stronger magic than someone else. It is about belonging completely to Jesus Christ. Christians Should Respond With Truth and CompassionChristians should also be careful not to turn discussions about Voodoo or Hoodoo into attacks against particular ethnic or cultural communities. People involved in these traditions are human beings made in the image of God and should be treated with dignity and love. The Gospel is not a message of hatred toward people. It is a message calling every person—regardless of culture, nationality, or background—to turn away from anything contrary to God and follow Jesus Christ. Paul preached to people surrounded by pagan religions and magical practices, yet his message remained centered upon Christ. The Christian response should therefore be both uncompromising and compassionate: Love the person. Preach the Gospel. Reject the occult practice. Point people toward Jesus. Freedom does not come through another magical ritual. Freedom comes through Jesus Christ. Jesus said: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." — John 8:36 Voodoo and Hoodoo are not identical. Voodoo/Vodou refers to religious traditions involving spiritual beliefs and practices that developed primarily from African religious traditions in the Caribbean and Louisiana. Hoodoo generally refers to African American folk spiritual and magical practices that developed primarily in the United States. Their histories are complex, and Christians should represent those histories accurately. At the same time, Scripture gives Christians a clear standard concerning spiritual practices. Divination, sorcery, necromancy, spirit consultation, magical manipulation, and seeking supernatural power outside of God are repeatedly forbidden. The Christian does not need another spiritual power. We do not need another mediator. We do not need another spirit. We have Jesus Christ. "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." — 1 Timothy 2:5 Jesus Christ is sufficient. And whenever Christianity encounters practices involving forbidden spiritual powers, the biblical response remains the same: Turn away from darkness, submit yourself completely to God, and follow Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 3:5-6 states, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." As Christians, we are called to seek wisdom and guidance from God through prayer and reading the Bible, rather than seeking answers from sources that are outside of God's will. The Bible teaches that God is the source of all knowledge and wisdom, and that we can trust in him to guide us in all things. The Bible talks a lot about money, and it's one of Satan's favorite areas to attack. Many of the people that come to us for deliverance ministry are affected financially. However, because some people have been in bondages for such periods of time, they often continue to make bad financial decisions. One of the worst financial decisions a believer can commit is not to place their trust in Jesus' Christ as their provider. And as a result, tithing is one of the first things to go. The inability to be generous even when we don't have, opens the door to the devourer, the spirit of Mammon. Mammon wrecks havoc to everything we produce and create. Borrowing money violates scripture (Romans 13:8) and it promotes impulse buying (Prov. 19:2). Also, it keeps us in bondage. The Bible tells us that the borrower is the slave to the lender (Proverbs. 22:7). How can we stay out of debt? 1) Follow God's value system for your finances: a) Gos is the provider (Debt 8:17-18; Eccl 5:19) b) He provides through diligent labor (money doesn't fall from the sky, you must work) (Prov. 10:4-6, 12:14, 13:11)> c) He provides through answered prayers (Phil 4:6; Hey 11:6) d) He holds you accountable for handling your finances (1 Cor 4:2). e) Put God first through tithes and offerings (Prov. 3:9-10). 2) Develop discipline and avoid impulse spending. a) Make a list and stick to it. b) Understand the difference between needs and wants. c) Buy things that last longer. d) Use coupons e) Don't shop while hungry or depressed. f) Buy while on sale. 3) Learn from your past financial failures a) Analyze the consequences of past mistakes b) What could you have done differently c) Take calculated risk. d) Learn from the Bible. The book of proverbs are full of financial wisdom. e) Don't borrow unless it makes you money. Don't let Satan tell you that there's no hope for you. There is always hope. Financial education is key to having a healthy financial life. The Bible tell us that a righteous man leaves and inheritance to his children's children (Proverbs 13:22). We know that Native Americans have the legend of the wendigo, in which a witch doctor through witchcraft is able to transform from a human to an animal. Many Native Americans are even afraid to talk about it. They believe that talking about them actually attract the wendigo. So getting any evidence is tough. The legend of the werewolf is another example of shape shifting. Many years ago, I read a book from Rebecca Brown “He Came to Set the Captives Free,” in which Rebecca described how people (witches) willingly would allowed themselves to be possessed by so many demons, that they would shapeshift into werewolves. They would the enforcer of these covens. The Vikings had the Berserkers. These were fierce warriors that felt no pain and would dress up as Wolves or Bears. They took the characteristics of these animals, after going through rituals and ceremonies. Through our ministry, we have found wolflike spirits inside of people. These people would behave like wolves, growl and snarl. The Warrens from the Conjuring movies dealt with a case similar to this. A fellow claimed to be possessed by a wolf. He would become like a werewolf during his exorcisms. Is there Biblical examples of this in the Bible? Daniel 4:32-33 talks about the transformation of Nebuchadnezzar into some type of beast. Would you imagine walking in the park and being confronted by a beast that was totally hairy and had nails like a birds claw? How about the in Proverbs 30:14? In which it is clearly talking about a vampirism, “The are those whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, to devour the poor from the earth, the needy from among mankind.
